HRH Ashi Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck conferred the award.June 6, 2012 - Coinciding with the World Environment Day on June 5, 2012, Bhutan Ecological Society commemorated the day recognizing the individuals who have committed their activities in conservation of environment. The Second Jigme Singye Wangchuck Outstanding Environment Stewardship Award for Excellence in Field Leadership was conferred by Her Royal Highness Princess Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck, Honorable Chief Guest and Royal Patron, Bhutan Ecological Society.

Bhutan observed Pedestrians’ Day coinciding with the World Environment Day

June 6, 2012 - Coinciding with the World Envrionment Day on June 5, Bhutan observed the first Pedestrians' Day throughout the country in the core city areas. Many people were seen walking to their work places from their home while some walked from the designated public parking areas.

RSPN initiating cleaning campaign commemorating its 25th Anniversary

wed logo 2012Every year 5th June is celebrated throughout the world as the World Environment Day.  World Environment Day (WED) is observed each year as an annual event and supposedly the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action.  The day is celebrated with environment related activities involving people from all walks of life.

WED is a UN Environment Programme initiative and it was first celebrated in 1972. Through this the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

Legal teeth to bite litterbugs

waste kuensel 19Apr2012With the waste prevention and   management regulation 2012 coming into force yesterday, people littering or dumping waste in the wrong places, or urinating or defecating in a public place, will be slapped fines, ranging from Nu 100 to Nu 20,000.

Some of the other offences, according to the regulation, are sale of goods or services on the streets and pedestrian walkways without approval, and dumping waste into the streams, rivers, drainage systems or other water bodies.
